LIVI lost out in a pre-season friendly at Montrose last night by two goals to one, despite a strong first half performance by the first team and a strike from Andy Halliday ten minutes from the break.
The Lions started strong by putting the home side on the back foot through high pressure defending and a strong passing game. Playing a 4-3-3 formation, Livingston controlled large portions of the first half and came off at half-time in a buoyant mood.
Head Coach John Murphy noticed the difference, saying: "We worked on getting higher up the park than we did against Falkirk throughout the week and it showed tonight. We are a decent passing side, but by winning the ball further up the pitch, we are in better positions to go forward and attack.
"The first group created more shots at goal, more set pieces, and obviously, a fine goal from Andy."
The second half began with an entirely new 11 players, made up of trialists and members of the U19's squad. This was a pre-match strategy by Murphy to ensure fresh legs in preparation for the upcoming week.
"There were several factors in my decision to play the 1st group 45 minutes. We are two weeks into our preparations and while the team is fit and healthy overall, I have a plan on where I want to be at this point and did not want to risk anyone.
"
Montrose's artificial surface was quite good, but it does take its toll on the legs in a different manner than natural grass.
"Finally, not only do we have a friendly match against English opposition on Monday, but our first official competitive match will be the 25th versus Queen of the South in the Alba Cup. No disrespect to Montrose, but these next two games take priority at this point of the season and I believe the split squad tonight will pay future dividends."
Preparations are now taking place at this moment for the friendly match against Plymouth Argyle on Monday. Hundreds of Argyle supporters are expected to make the long journey from the south to be in attendance to add to the atmosphere, and Murphy feels it will be a strong test of his young team.
"Paul Sturrock was a fantastic player and is an excellent manager so I expect Plymouth to be well prepared for this match.
"These are the type of matches that I want to play at this point of the season as easy games do not do you any favours."
The Livi boss also had special mention for the traveling support that made the two hour trek to Links Park to cheer on their team.
"The entire team appreciated the 30 to 40 supporters who made the trip up to Montrose. I hope they understand my strategy for this particular game and weren't too disappointed in the result.
"We have trialists that I need to see in match situations and young boys who need to learn what it takes to play at this level. I want to win every match, friendly or official, but I also have a bigger picture in mind.
"
I want points on the board starting August 8th and advancement in two cups beforehand. It is my belief that our pre-season preparations can lead to such successes.
"
I look forward to seeing a strong home support on Monday so we can show everyone that Livingston is ready for the upcoming season."
