Under 19: Forfar Athletic 5-2 Livingston

Our hopes of winning the Under 19 League Cup disappeared at Station Park last night as Forfar came from two goals down to win in extra time.

We dominated for long spells in regulation time, playing some excellent football on the pristine artificial surface.

It took us until the stroke of half time to get on the scoresheet, Jack Beaumont emphatically scoring from the penalty spot after Kyle Lander was fouled.

We hit the bar on three occasions and had a shot kicked off the line as we pressed for a second goal, and when that goal eventually arrived in the second half, it looked like we would comfortably see out the win.

Scott Wilson got the goal, reacting quickly to beat the Forfar 'keeper after Beaumont's free kick hit the bar and rebounded back into play.

Alas, it's often said that teams are at their most vulnerable after scoring, and Forfar took advantage of a collective lapse in concentration to pull a goal back almost immediately.

And they salvaged a draw to force the game into extra time with a scrambled goal several minutes into stoppage time at the end of the second half.

The home side took encouragement from their last gasp equaliser and went on to seal a win in extra time.

From our point of view it was a half hour of football to forget. Forfar's third goal came from slack defending at a corner and within a few moments they added a fourth when the referee overruled his assistant's offside flag and allowed a Forfar attacker to finish.

Coll Donaldson was amongst our best players throughout, but his night ended prematurely when a sliding tackle on the touchline attracted a second yellow card.

Forfar subsequently added a fifth with a fine counter attack as we chased the game, and a miserable extra time period was completed when goalkeeper Mark Hurst was red-carded for a professional foul.

Right back Kamran Tufail took over in goal for the closing stages, in which we were unable to reduce the leeway.

Forfar will now play Hamilton Accies in the final on a date to be confirmed.

We retain an interest in the Reserve League Cup, but the semi finals and final of that competition now seem likely to be held over until early in the new season.

Livingston: Hurst, Tufail, Rutherford, Fairman, Donaldson, Beaumont, Wilson (Davie 83), Murphy (Bonnar 86), Lander (Hunter 90), Downie, McDonald.
