Our hopes of Youth Cup glory came to a disappointing end at Albyn Park this afternoon as Cowdenbeath edged us out by a 3-2 scoreline.
A tight and competitive contest tipped the way of the Blue Brazil shortly after half time when Coll Donaldson flicked out at an opponent off the ball and was given a straight red card.
At that point we were 2-1 ahead and in control, but Donaldson's dismissal handed a strong Cowden side a lifeline that they took full advantage of.
The game had got off to the best possible start when Danny Mullen followed up his first team goal yesterday with an exquisite chip to score within two minutes.
Craig Johnston replied for Cowden but our lead was restored with 19 minutes played when Liam Gray tapped in after a lung bursting run and perfectly placed cross from the left by Conor McDonald.
We led 2-1 at the break, but forced to play with ten men for most of the second half, Cowndebeath got themselves back into the game in the 72nd minute when Liam Callaghan's free kick bounced through a ruck of bodies in the penalty area and through to beat Mark Hurst.
The game looked set to go to extra time but Cowden snatched a late winner when Hurst fumbled an easy catch and Jack Nicolson was on hand to force the ball over the line from six yards out.
In many ways it was a self-inflicted defeat, but credit to Cowdenbeath who now face Kilmarnock at the quarter final stage in February.
Livingston: Hurst, Tufail, McDonald, Donaldson, Fairman, Beaumont, Wilson (Rutherford), Downie, Mullen, A Russell, L Gray (Lander).
